Hello everyone!
Welcome back to Cosette's Beauty Pantry for another installment of "Wisdom Wednesday"! This week, we’re diving deep into a topic that’s at the heart of everything we love here: skincare routines. Whether you’re a minimalist who swears by a quick cleanse-and-go or someone who relishes a 10-step ritual, there’s an art to crafting a routine that works for you. Today, I’ll be sharing the wisdom I’ve gathered over the years—both from personal experience and a bit of research—to help you build a skincare routine that’s effective, enjoyable, and perfectly tailored to your skin’s needs.

Skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all, and that’s the beauty of it. What works wonders for your best friend might leave your skin feeling lacklustre, and that’s okay. The key lies in understanding your skin type, listening to its signals, and adapting your routine as life (and the seasons) throw changes your way. So, grab a cuppa, settle in, and let’s explore how to create a skincare routine that leaves you glowing inside and out.
Step 1: Know Thy Skin
The foundation of any great skincare routine is knowing your skin type. Are you oily, dry, combination, or perhaps sensitive? Maybe you’re prone to acne, or you’ve started noticing fine lines creeping in. Identifying this is your starting point because it dictates the products and ingredients that will suit you best.
For instance, if your T-zone shines like a beacon by midday, you’re likely dealing with oily skin—look for lightweight, non-comedogenic products that won’t clog pores. Dry skin? You’ll want richer creams with hydrating heroes like hyaluronic acid or ceramides. Combination skin can be trickier, often needing a balancing act of hydration and oil control. And if your skin flares up at the slightest provocation, sensitive types, you’ll want to stick to gentle, fragrance-free formulas.
Not sure where you fall? Here’s a simple test: Cleanse your face with a mild cleanser, skip all other products, and wait an hour. If it feels tight or flaky, you’re likely dry. Shiny all over? Oily. A mix of both? Combination. Redness or irritation? Sensitive. It’s not foolproof, but it’s a start.
Step 2: The Core Four
Once you’ve got a handle on your skin type, it’s time to build the backbone of your routine. I call this the Core Four: cleanse, treat, moisturise, and protect. These steps form the bedrock of good skincare, adaptable to morning, evening, or both.
- Cleanse: Morning and night, cleansing removes dirt, oil, and impurities. In the evening, it’s non-negotiable—especially if you’ve worn makeup or SPF. A double cleanse (oil-based followed by water-based) is brilliant for a thorough job, but a single gentle cleanser works too. I’m partial to a creamy cleanser for my dry days and a gel one when my skin’s feeling oilier.
- Treat: This is where you address specific concerns—think serums or targeted treatments. Vitamin C for brightness, niacinamide for pores, or retinol for anti-ageing (start slow with that one!). Pick one or two activities that align with your goals, and don’t overdo it—too many can irritate.
- Moisturise: Hydration is king, no matter your skin type. Even oily skin needs moisture; it’s just about finding the right texture. A lightweight gel for oily skin, a thicker cream for dry—the choice is yours. Look for ingredients like glycerin or squalane to lock in that goodness.
- Protect: Sunscreen is your daytime must-have. UV rays don’t care if it’s cloudy, and they’re the biggest culprits behind premature ageing and damage. SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum, and you’re golden. Yes, even in February.
Step 3: Timing Matters
Skincare isn’t just about what you use but when. Morning routines are about prepping and protecting—think antioxidants like vitamin C paired with SPF. Evening is your repair-and-restore window—retinol or peptides shine here, working while you sleep. I’ve found splitting actives (like retinol at night, acids in the morning) keeps my skin happy and less overwhelmed.
And don’t rush it. Give each product a moment to sink in—say, a minute or two—before layering the next. It’s not just about efficacy; it’s a little ritual of self-care. There’s something calming about those quiet moments, isn’t there?
Step 4: Listen and Adapt
Here’s a nugget of wisdom: your skin isn’t static. Hormones, stress, weather, and even diet can shift its mood. Last month, my skin was parched from winter heating, so I swapped my gel moisturiser for a richer balm. This week, with milder weather, I’ve lightened up again. Pay attention to what your skin’s telling you—redness, breakouts, or dullness are all clues to tweak your routine.
Seasonal switches are smart too. Heavier creams in winter, lighter lotions in summer. And if you’re trying a new product, patch test first and introduce it gradually. I learnt that the hard way!
Step 5: The Extras (Because We Love a Treat)
The Core Four is your essential toolkit, but extras can elevate things. Exfoliation—chemical (like AHAs or BHAs) rather than harsh scrubs—once or twice a week keeps skin smooth and boosts product absorption. Masks are another delight: a hydrating one for a moisture boost, a clay mask for oilier days. And eye creams? If puffiness or dark circles bug you, they’re worth a go, though a good moisturiser can often do the trick.
Don’t feel pressured to do it all, though. I’ll admit, there are weeks I skip the extras entirely, and my skin doesn’t hold it against me. It’s about balance, not perfection.
The Golden Rules
Before we wrap up, a few timeless skincare truths:
- Consistency beats complexity. A simple routine you stick to trumps a fancy one you abandon.
- Hydration is non-negotiable—inside and out. Drink water and use humectants, and your skin will thank you.
- Patience is key. Most products take 4-6 weeks to show results, so don’t give up too soon.
- Less is often more. Overloading activities can backfire—trust me, I’ve been there.
My Current Routine (For Inspiration)
Curious about what’s on my bathroom shelf right now? Mornings, I cleanse with a gentle gel, follow with a vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, or niacinamide serum (my pores adore it), a light moisturiser, and SPF 50. Evenings, it’s a cleanser, a retinol or peptide serum, and a richer moisturiser. Twice a week, I’ll sneak in an AHA exfoliant or a hydrating mask if I’m feeling fancy. It’s simple, but it works for me—though I tweak it as needed.
Building a skincare routine is a journey, not a race. It’s about finding what makes your skin sing and enjoying the process. There’s no “perfect” routine, just the one that’s perfect for you right now. And that’s the wisdom I hope you take away today: skincare is personal, powerful, and a little bit magical when you get it right.
