Many hairstylists used to suggest getting a trim once a month, every four (4) weeks. Yes, if you have short hair, you should trim it every four weeks; if you want to keep your current hairstyle. However, if you have medium-length hair, a cut every four weeks is probably too often. Getting a haircut every eight (8) to twelve (12) weeks is a better option to keep your medium length looking healthy without growing it out long.
If you have long hair, you can wait even more than eight to twelve weeks between haircuts. A haircut every three (3) to four (4) months will work best for your needs. You have to give your hair time to grow (about 0.5 inches each month) between cuts to avoid sacrificing length. When I used to wear my hair straight, I trimmed it every three or four weeks. Nowadays, I wear my hair in its natural texture (I have a loose curly hair pattern), and I plan to trim my hair at the beginning of each season! By doing so, I will be giving myself a haircut four times a year, once every three months (12 weeks). To be honest, I am still getting used to waiting this long to cut my hair.
If you have fine hair, you should get a trim every four (4) to six (6) weeks. Fine hair is more susceptible to damage from styling tools and products than other hair types. For this reason, frequent trims are a must for healthy-looking hair.
If you have layered hair, you might notice that within a couple of months, your haircut loses its shape. Usually, longer layered styles can stretch a bit longer between trims. Layers should be reshaped every eight (8) to twelve (12) weeks. Fringes or bangs should be trimmed monthly, but you can go longer if you have lower-maintenance styles like wispy bangs or curtain bangs.
Here are telltale signs that you need a haircut:
- Your hair tangles easily and it gets harder to detangle.
- Your hair is thick at the roots but thin at the ends.
- You have more bad than good hair days.
- Your curls start losing or changing their shape.
- You notice split ends.
- The ends of your hair stick together/tangle.
- The ends of your hair start breaking off.
- Split ends are travelling up your hair shaft.
No matter how thick and strong your hair is, you should never wait longer than six (6)
months in between haircuts. After a certain amount of time, no matter how well you treat your hair, your ends tend to get damaged!
How often do you get a haircut?
